We have an exciting year ahead of us! The Aegis Students Movement has a vibrant new look and website, with exciting new ways for you to get involved and take action against genocide and mass atrocities.
What lies at the heart of the human tragedies in Rwanda and Sudan is what is most destructive to all our communities; prejudice, racism, discrimination and exclusion. What we as young people can do to challenge this in our own communities is as fundamental in the fight against genocide as law changes and governmental lobbying. This year will see a shift in emphasis from campaigning to education and awareness-raising.
Aegis Students Youth Speakers will be delivering awareness raising talks around the country, while many Aegis Students Societies, such as the one at Nottingham Trent University featured in this months newsletter, have been planning and implementing awareness and fundraising events in schools and on campus.
Aegis Students in Rwanda are working alongside the education programme at the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre to encourage young Rwandans to promote positive values to counter prejudice and divisive ideas. Check out the International section of the newsletter where Yannick Tona speaks candidly about his experience as a Rwandan Aegis Student.
But we won’t forget our roots – Aegis Students will continue to campaign whenever necessary. This month Aegis Students is supporting the Sudan Letter Writing Campaign, to call upon MPs to urge the British Government to support sustainable peace in Sudan. A five minute action is all it takes www.sudanletterwritingcapaign.org
