Educators and other professionals are invited to join Aegis Trust on our annual Professionals Field Seminar in Rwanda – early August 2010.

Led by experts in the field of genocide education and prevention from the UK and Rwanda, the one week seminar will focus on equipping participants with the tools and knowledge necessary for delivering effective education about it and to support the work Aegis is doing to stop and prevent genocide.

The seminar is ideal for those who want to gain a deeper understanding about the 1994 Rwandan genocide . You will have the opportunity to hear from and share experiences with survivors, engage with Rwandan educators and students, visit memorial sites and attend specially organized seminars and workshops examining issues from working with youth to reconciliation and the future of Rwanda.

The Rwanda seminar will be preceded by a day long pre-trip orientation seminar at the UK’s Holocaust Centre (date tbc). An itinerary and dates of flights to Rwanda will be confirmed by end of March 2010 – however, the trip is scheduled to take place during the second week of August. The trip is organised by Aegis’ educational teams in the UK and Rwanda working with local partners in Rwanda.

Professionals Seminar:

Testimony: Share with and listen to the testimony of Rwandan genocide survivors – many of whom continue to struggle on, 15 years after the genocide.

Education and Workshops: Work with Aegis Trusts’ Genocide Education Team at Kigali Memorial Centre, develop educational tools to use in your institution. Attend specially organised seminars and workshops related to genocide education, reconciliation and the future of Rwanda.

Explore: Visit different parts of Rwanda, experience the beauty of the country and have time to relax and reflect.

“The Ministry of Culture and Sport in Rwanda supports the Disscover Rwanda trips which Aegis organises to enable students and teachers from around the world to visit Rwanda, learn about the genocide and discover our beautiful country and culture in Rwanda – ‘The Land of A Thousand Hills’. I hope you will take the opportunity to participate in Discover Rwanda and become an ambassador for Rwanda in the fight against genocide, when you return home.”

Joseph Habineza - Minister for Culture and Sports in Rwanda

“Visiting Rwanda was an extraordinary experience for me…Aegis has tailored this field seminar to give teachers a deeper insight into the impact of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.

“For the people of Rwanda, the challenges – not least the educational challenges – remain immense. And for us back in the UK, it raises fundamental questions about what responsibilities we have as citizens in a global power.”

Stephen Twigg, Former UK Minister for Schools

“I visited the Holocaust centre in Nottingham when I was a student at Leeds University. It gave me a sense of sadness. It was a horrific event, but genocide still happens today… …It will be heart-wrenching, but I think it will help me to bring the lessons into the classroom,”

Amanda, Teacher and past participant
