NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Aegis Students National Conference is an annual event that brings together young people from across the UK and aims to empower and inspire them to take action against genocide. The conference celebrates the achievements of Aegis Students Societies and gives young people a forum in which to network and help shape the direction of Aegis Students for the coming year.

The 2010 National Conference will take place on the 29 March at the Cass Business School in London.

The 2008 conference, “From Education to Action” – taking inspiration from the Herbert Spencer quote “the great aim of education is not knowledge, but action” – showcased inspiring talks from Dr. James Smith, CEO of Aegis Trust and Dr. Mukesh Kapila.

Aegis Students National Conference

Dr. Kapila, Special Representative to the Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, was a member of the first British teams to see the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Upon witnessing the genocide he vowed to never again allow such atrocities to occur on his watch.

After hearing the rape testimony of a Darfuri woman, Dr. Kapila has been outspoken in his condemnation of the genocide in Darfur and has worked extensively, along with Aegis Trust, in fighting against the human rights abuses in the region.

My message to students wanting to join Aegis is that they cannot afford not to…  We need to constantly, constantly be vigilant against the forces of evil that can inflict so much harm upon innocent people.
- Mukesh Kapila

The Aegis Students White Rose Awards will feature as an annual event at the National Conference, providing an opportunity for the National Aegis Students Committee to celebrate the dedication and passion of committed Aegis Students Societies.
