| After the killing stops, the consequences of genocide continue. | ![]() |
Many survivors widowed or orphaned by the genocide have remained disadvantaged ever since. Many young survivors find themselves heads of households – responsible for sustaining their younger siblings but without the means of paying school fees or buying school materials. Many women widowed during the genocide are unable to make ends meet to pay for basic household expenses, such as water or electricity. Families are forced to live on the street, their livelihoods destroyed.
On Discover Rwanda participants have the opportunity to volunteer to help support widows and orphans supported by Aegis’ Social Programme in a variety of ways including house painting, gardening and teaching.
The Social Programme is an Aegis initiative created to help alleviate some of the suffering of survivors of the Rwandan genocide still affected by its consequences.
