Campaigning is a crucial part of the work that Aegis Students does. We lobby local and national governments to support Aegis Trust’s campaigns calling for Protection, Asylum and Justice for Darfur.
Aegis Students has played a vital role in numerous national and international campaigns, working in partnership with a variety of NGOs and organizations, including substantial support for the Darfur Union in the UK.
PROTECTION
Aegis Trust’s campaigns identify civilians who are at risk of genocide and puts pressure on governments to protect them. By supporting Fund4Darfur Aegis Students recognise that they too have a role to play in protecting survivors living in Darfur and in the UK. Aegis Students also helps to support Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers living in the UK with the Teach English to Darfuris scheme.
ASYLUM
Aegis Trust has gathered evidence of returned asylum seekers being tortured. Conditions in the squatter camps in Khartoum, where many failed asylum seekers are sent, can be worse than in Darfur. In March 2008, Aegis Students participated in a nationwide letter writing campaign to stop Mr AbdulMajid Hassan Ismail, a Darfuri, from being deported back to Khartoum. They reminded their local MPs of Westminster’s commitment, under the 1951 Refugee Convention, to protect those who flee persecution on account of their race, religion or beliefs. He was not sent back.
JUSTICE
Aegis works towards justice for the victims in Darfur and supports the role of the International Criminal Court. Aegis Trust has made films about the perpetrators and victims in Darfur, runs the ‘Wanted for War Crimes’ campaign and is a founding member of the ‘Justice for Darfur’ campaign. Aegis Students have launched their own grass roots campaigns for justice. In 2008, for example, they promoted an online petition in support of UBS Divestments. Aegis Students has also played a vital role in supporting the Darfur Union by attending and contributing to protests that call for Justice for Darfur.
